Why Resist?
In México, the Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) is a time for remembrance – a day when we honour those who have departed before us. Folklore tells us that, for one day, we can be reunited with them and enjoy our time together.

This time, instead of simply remembering late relatives, I choose to honour those who departed while resisting – for it is through resistance that rights, freedom and liberties have been achieved. There is not better way to honour those who left, or were taken too early, while striving to make the World a slightly better place: those whose childhoods were stolen, those whose dreams were destroyed, those who were forced to resist oppression, colonialism, arrogance, greed, indifference, segregation, “supremacy”, authoritarianism, and inequality – we shall never forget their sacrifice.
As the horrors of war and genocide unfold before our eyes, and some of us believe we are witnessing the beginning of a profound global shift in power, we must remember that our rights were born of struggle – and can just as easily be lost if we fail to resist those who seek to erode or suspend them. This message applies to all aspects of life.
On this day, Mexicans joke with Death. We believe that she is fair, and there is little to be afraid of from her. It is the living we must heed…
